Mapping otters and their habitat

Mapping Otters and their habitat

By Puviarasan | Oct 2020 |

In this blog post we will focus more on where they live in the backwaters of Pondicherry. We will aim to give a bird eye view of their place through interactive maps, photos and videos. Otters live in place which are rich in biodiversity. When we say biodiversity, it means a mix of flora and fauna. Plants and animals. They coexist together with each other in the beautiful backwaters of Pondicherry.

We have used Google my maps polygon tool to map the exact spots where otters had been spotted. You can zoom in and out (with both fingers) to know their whereabouts.

It might look easy as we have pointed to the places in the map. But it is not easy to see them in the wild just like that. This exercise of spotting otters in the wild tested our patience to another level. It was a coordinated 6 month effort that went into this journey of locating Otters.

Fisherfolks have been of great help to us in many ways. They give us incredible data and insights into the life of otters and how they interact with the human world. Here is a short video captured when we were on a catamaran ride with a fisherman where he shares his experience with otters.

It is not quite easy to locate where otters live. But once you see it, you will readily get infatuated with this animal.
